Nigeria To Experience A Lunar Eclipse On October 19 And Solar Eclipse On November 3rd

Image
According to International Time U.T.C, a Lunar Eclipse will occur On October 19 and a solar eclipse will occur on November 3 2013 which will be visible in some parts of the World. It will be  visible  in some cities in Nigeria eg.Abuja, Ilorin, Kaduna, Lagos and other cities mostly in north central and west. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into  its shadow   This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, a lunar eclipse can only occur the night of a full moon while a solar eclipse as seen from earth occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun.

I Won't Resign– Speaker Of The House Of Reps, Tambuwal

Image
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Aminu Tambuwal Tuesday debunked rumours that he is under pressure to resign. Tambuwal made this disclosure in a statement issued and signed on his behalf by his Media Aide, Mallam Imam Imam. In the statement it was expressly stated that  ”he is  not under pressure from any quarter to resign his appointment.” “The story of the purported resignation, as published in the Nigerian Pilot Newspaper of Tuesday, October 8, 2013, is not true, and for all intents and purposes, is part of a larger campaign to smear the person and integrity of the Number Four Citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” “The story did not come as a surprise considering that it is one in a line of similar fabricated stories dished out about Tambuwal by Pilot Newspaper for sometime now.” “While we don’t want to believe that the owners of the newspaper have allowed their platform to be used for a smear campaign on the legislature and its principal officers,

New Cadillac Escalade Unveiled

Image
The Cadillac Escalade has never lacked for attention. Launched as a rush response to the Lincoln Navigator's success in the booming SUV years of the '90s, the Escalade became the definition of automotive bling. Today, Cadillac unveiled the all-new 2015 edition, based on the bones of General Motors' new full-size SUVs, and if anything, Cadillac has made the Escalade more of a rolling luxury throne than ever, from the tailfin-descended taillamps to its 10-LED headlamps that shine bright like a diamond. Using the chassis pieces of the new Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon, the new Escalade borrows the 420-hp/4 V-8 shared with the Chevy Corvette Stingray and its six-speed automatic. There are a few other mechanical trick pieces - the Magnetic Ride Control for better body damping, and cylinder deactivation for some kind of unspecified fuel economy improvement - but the Escalade has never been a vehicle bought by anyone seeing performance or even driving agility. In an application dated October 7, 2013, Monday, filed before Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, Sokoto, who is answering to a two-count terrorism charge, urged the court to award the money to him as exemplary and general damages against the Federal Government over alleged torture and beatings he suffered in the hands of operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS. He made the application shortly after his team of lawyers, led by Mr. Sheriff Okoh, urged the trial court  t o discharge and acquit the accused person  for want of incriminating evidence linking him to the Boko Haram Islamic sect. It was the contention of the alleged Boko Haram kingpin that the government fai

'My Time At Barcelona Is Over'

Image
Victor Valdes has reiterated his intention to leave Barcelona next summer, saying that he feels that his time at Camp Nou is over. The Spain international would end his contract at the end of the season and announced during the summer that he would not make an extension. A number of Barca players, including midfielder Andres Iniesta, have publicly stated that they have tried to persuade Valdes to change his mind and stay in Catalunya, but the 31-year-old shot-stopper says he has his heart set on a move abroad. "My time here is done,"  the goalkeeper told Antena3.  "They offered me the chance to renew [my contract] but my decision had been made." "I am seeking new challenges. I want to play in another league and be with my family in another place. "But this season I have still been feeling the love and support of the people and that is greatly appreciated." Valdes, a product of Barcelona's youth academy, has spent his entire professional c

Online Poll - Most Prominent Founding Fathers of Nigeria

Image
An online magazine asked its readers to list top founding fathers of Nigeria.  Below, is the list of 10 most prominent Nigerian leaders. The list is in no particular order. Interestingly (hardly surprising?) all of the fathers belong to the period of struggle for the independence of Nigeria. 1. CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO 6 March 1909 - 9 May 1987 Awolowo was the first Premier of the Western Region from 1954 to 1960. Under his administration programs that provided free health care for children and free universal primary education were launched. He was also the official Leader of the Opposition in the Federal parliament to the Balewa government from 1960 to 1963. Balewa was a promoter of a federal system in Nigeria, advocating for local autonomy based on ethno-linguistic identity, which laid the foundation for creation of 36 contemporary states in Nigeria.  2. AHMADU BELLO 12 June 1910 - 15 January 1966

Airfares Jump Over Dana Airlines’ Suspension

Image
Passengers were unpleasantly surprised yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, MMA2 and the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, Terminal 1: airline operators substantially raised airfares.  According to the information gathered by Vanguard, for example, a 55-minutes flight to Abuja attracted between  N22, 000  and  N26, 000  in the economy class depending on how early a prospective passenger bought the ticket.   Before the clampdown on Dana Airlines, the ticket price was between for between  N18, 000  and  N20, 000 .   First Nation Airways that resumed flights recently after closing shop for about 14 months charged  N25, 500  to Abuja while Aero collected  N22, 500 .   Some passengers, interviewed by Vanguard, felt disappointed with the fact that the operators were using the opportunity of the crisis in the industry to exploit travellers.   One of the passengers characterized such a situation as unfortunate and pathetic stressing that in a country where the econ

Jonathan's Speeches: Just Yams, No Palm Oil?

Image
Even the most ardent admirers of the Goodluck Jonathan agree that there is a desperate lack of inspirational words or actions emanating from the presidency. Apart from infantile clichés such as  'breath of fresh air'  and the non-existent  'Transformation Agenda,'  no one can remember anything memorable or inspirational emanating from the mouth of our president. His in-eloquence, apparent poor diction, stuttering monotone speech, and inability to speak extemporaneously make it difficult for him to get any concise thoughts across to his audience, and guarantees that his words cannot be etched on our marble. It would therefore be quite out of character if not well nigh impossible for him to inspire anyone with anything he says off the top of his head. That is why he has speech writers. The best speech can be marred in delivery. As Chinua Achebe points out, words are like palm oil with which yams are eaten. Unfortunately, they are consistently letting him down.
