FG Suspends Dana Air’s Licence Again

The Federal Government has once again suspended the operating license of Dana Air pending the resolution of certain safety issues, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has said. This is coming barely three months after the airline resumed operations following a seven-month suspension after its Boeing Md-83 crashed in Lagos, killing 163 people The Acting Director-General, NCAA, Mr. Joyce Nkemakolam, who confirmed the development in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday, said the suspension, which took effect on Saturday morning, would last until the safety issues were rectified by the carrier. He said the suspension followed a directive from the Ministry of Aviation, asking the airline to stop operation until “some safety issues that cropped up over the weekend were resolved.” The acting DG said the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, had invited officials of Dana Air to a meeting in Abuja today (Monday) over the development. Nkemakolam said that on

Henry Okah: Sentencing Starts For Convicted Terrorist

Image
Flanked by 12 police officers, Okah, dressed in a red and blue chequered T-shirt, entered the dock on Monday and turned to blow a kiss to his wife Azuka, who was seated in the third row, before taking his place. The court heard Okah would apply for special entries to be made on the record. JP Marais, for Okah, told the court that one of the witnesses he intended on calling only arrived in South African on Monday morning because the flight was delayed. He said he consulted with Okah last week, but did not finish it. State prosecutor Shaun Abrahams said a witness the state intended calling arrived in the country on Sunday and he did not have enough time to prepare the replying affidavit. Judge Neels Claassen said proceedings should continue. Marais asked for a short postponement to tie down consultations with Okah, after Okah said he wanted to speak to his legal team. One of the witnesses Okah intended on calling sat in the front row of the public gallery. On January 21, Okah

Pope Francis' Humble Superiority

Image
In just a few days, Jorge Bergoglio has shown that as Pope Francis he will be the kind of approachable, down-to-earth man that people yearn for in a spiritual leader. Like the Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu, he smiles easily and appears to walk comfortably through the world. He showed his humanity on his first full day in office as he suddenly left the Vatican to visit Rome's main church, the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica, and then stopped by the hotel where he had stayed before the recent conclave to pay his bill. Like any major political leaders who communicate with symbols and gestures, Catholic hierarchs use style and stagecraft to reach their followers. The conclave and then the presentation of the new pope have been refined, as theater, over more than a thousand years. The secrecy surrounding the selection of the pontiff and the pomp accompanying the announcement from the balcony produce the kind of drama that rivets the world even in an age of technological d

Public Agencies Versus The President’s Enemies

Image
A tradition popularised by Olusegun Obasanjo has not been abandoned by the Goodluck Jonathan administration. It is that once one finds himself in Aso Villa he could declare, like King Louis XIV of France, “L’etat c’est moi” (I am the state). Today, the president and his henchmen have undermined the powers of government agencies, so much so that the latter have become mere puppets to be used in fighting the former’s perceived enemies. The man who once declared that he was neither a general nor a pharaoh looks set to become a despot. What Nigerians are currently witnessing under President Jonathan is a throwback to the ugly era of Obasanjo who caged almost all government institutions in preparation for a third term or life presidency project. That Obasanjo failed to achieve his ultimate ambition should serve as a reminder to both Jonathan and the public institutions being used that the victory of falsehood over truth can only be temporary. The EFCC, for instance, had its cred
