I May Resign If Nigeria Wins Nations Cup - Keshi

Image
The Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has said that he could pack his bags and resign from office if his team wins the ongoing African Cup of Nations in South Africa. Keshi said this at a press conference in South Africa while reacting to a question on whether he would still be with the team after the competition. ‘The most important thing is what I’m doing. If back home they don’t like what I’m doing well you can’t force someone to love you. “If I win the cup I may pack and leave, I’m a professional coach, Nigeria is where my heart is and if there’s any more offer out there….,” Keshi said. The coach, who won the Nations Cup as the captain of the Nigerian team at Tunisia 94, also said he has no problem working under a good foreign coach. “I’m never against a white coach in Africa, but do not bring a mediocre coach from Europe. “If you bring a good coach, I can learn from him. We have good African players but we didn’t give them opportunities because they’re black dude,

Keep Omeruo, Play Mikel Defensively - The Five Things Nigeria Must Do Against Mali

Image
The Super Eagles roused themselves last Sunday to beat overwhelming Africa Cup of Nations favourites, Cote d'Ivoire 2-1 and get a berth in the semi-final to play the Eagles of Mali. For the second consecutive edition, the Malians have knocked out the hosts in the quarter final. They subdued Gabon last January to end up in third position. OMERUO SHOULD CONTINUE IN YOBO'S STEAD: Though Joseph Yobo is adamant that he is fully fit now, Stephen Keshi must not be tempted to bring him back into the central defensive department to replace Kenneth Omeruo. Omeruo showed against Cote d’Ivoire that he is ready to step into the shoes of the captain and the most capped Super Eagles player ever. Keshi must take a leaf out of the 1994 triumph where he as captain played the opening match and that was it until the final when he raised the trophy aloft with stand-in captain, Augustine Eguavoen. There is no need to be sentimental – Omeruo is quicker, stronger and hungrier; all attribut

FRESH: Jonathan's Facebook Address to Nigerians

Image
Today, this address to Nigerians appeared on Goodluck Jonathan's Facebook page. The piece focuses on economy and investment, also on youths' employment, railways and pipelines' rehabilitation and opening of the new universities. Dear friends on facebook, The determination of this administration to create wealth in Nigeria and for Nigerians has led us to focus our investment drive towards attracting Foreign Direct Investments in manufacturing and the service sector to ensure that jobs are created. And this drive is not an exercise in futility as Nigeria is becoming the preferred destination for FDI. Just last week, General Electric announced a decision to invest $1 billion in setting up a manufacturing plant to support power generation and oil production. Their plant, to be situated in Calabar, will provide jobs for thousands with multiplier effect for tens of thousands more and will make Nigeria a hub for power equipment in the region. The end result of this investme

However, the Togolese were still in their rooms by Tuesday despite their rooms being booked for other people in anticipation of the team's departure. "Some players were in the parking lot [of the Protea The Winkler Hotel] when I arrived. CAF did nothing wrong. They informed the team in advance that if they lost they would leave the next day, but the team is still there at the hotel," a source reveals. "Togo were supposed to leave with the plane that dropped Ghana on Monday, but I'm told that [Emmanuel] Adebayor asked the players to stay because they were going to t

Yusuf said he was proud to be Nigerian, after watching Stephen Keshi’s team sent favourites Cote d’Ivoire packing from the tournament and revealed the optimism was so much that six governors, would be flying into Durban, to watch the semi-final match against Mali. “I’m particularly elated because nobody gave these boys any chance of survival against Cote d’Ivoire. God loves Nigeria and we should learn to believe in ourselves,” he said. “I am proud to be a Nigerian. Nigerians back home are happy and six Governors have called to inform that they will be watching their semi final match in Durban. It could be more but unfortunately my phone has gone off because the battery is down.” The High Commissioner, also encourage Nigerians to support the Eagles fully, as they go all out for gold. PHOTOS: Rihanna Poses With No Bra As She Puffs On Cigarettes

Image
She recently featured on a sultry Rolling Stones cover as she made startling revelations about her reconciliation with Chris Brown. And Rihanna cuts an equally smouldering figure in new outtakes from the shoot by acclaimed celebrity photographer Terry Richardson. One striking photograph features the 24-year-old star holding a hand rolled cigarette while puffing smoke towards the camera. With her hair partially shaved at the side, the star shows off several of her tattoos as she poses and pouts in just a flimsy vest top and no bra. She shows off her curves in another provocative pose which puts her bare legs on show. However, in another shot posted by Richardson, she dresses up in a high necked blouse, black leather skirt and jacket, while still clutching her trusty cigarette. The star spoke to the magazine about her relationship with Brown, after forgiving him for beating her nearly four years ago. In the interview, Rihanna appeared to officially confirm they are an ite

Senate held plenary 100 times in 2012 …spent 158 days on holiday

The Senate held plenary sessions 100 times in as many days and spent a total of 158 days on holiday during the year 2012, findings by Daily Trust have shown. Based on section 63 of the Constitution, the Senate is required to sit for at least 181 days in a year. But our correspondent reports that the Senate operates a legislative calendar that runs from June, and sits in plenary only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays while committees hold sessions throughout the week. The Constitution does not specify the way the Senate calendar should run and if committee sessions form part of the required sittings, as it only says: “The Senate and the House of Representatives shall each sit for a period of not less than one hundred and eighty-one days in a year.” Daily Trust’s checks on the activities of the upper chamber from January 1 to December 31, 2012 show that the Senate as a whole sat for a period of 100 days. Senators resumed on January 10 after the Christmas break of the prec

INCREDIBLE: NFF Booked Eagles Return Tickets Before Q/Final Match

The degree of doubt in the team and the technical crew by officials reached a crescendo soon after the team’s final group match against Ethiopia in Nelspruit, when it was openly suggested that a foreign coach would be sought to replace Keshi, once the team made its expected early exit from the tournament. Although the spokesman for the NFF, Chief Emeka Inyamah made a public denial over the search for a foreign coach, he did not dismiss its possibility. Addressing the press after the Ethiopia match, Inyamah said, “that to me is a distraction. Rather, we will come together at the end of the tournament to review everything. If he is worthy to continue, he will continue and if we think that there is need to bring in a white or black man to assist, then we bring one.” But events that transpired after that press conference pointed to the fact that the NFF did not believe the Coach Stephen Keshi team could beat Ivory Coast. NFF officials would not have been taken by surprise if

Why I Stopped N250m Monthly Pay To Militants – Dickson

Image
Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, yesterday, said he stopped the monthly payment of N250 million to militants on assumption of office to challenge the beneficiaries to work and earn a decent living and create equal opportunities for natives of the state to benefit from its resources.   Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Dickson said he had to put an end to the illicit practice because he knew that it could not be sustained and that the beneficiaries were not entitled to such largesse. He added that he had created an enabling environment for all to excel and achieve their set goals and would continue to explore ways and means of catering for the majority of the people. According to him, the insecurity that was once the hallmark of the state was due largely to inadequate investment in human capital by past administrations, which bred “a teeming youth population without adequate education to earn a living in an economy requiring skills and knowledge.” He ad

At YABATECH Alcohol Is A Taboo

Image
Some students of the institution at a relaxation joint ... on Thursday. Although Yaba College of Technology is in the heart of a city as social as Lagos, it is a no-alcohol institution for students and lecturers alike. Segun Olugbile writes on how the college community are coping with the policy: Kola, Austin and Femi (not their real names) have just finished some bottles of beer at Viginis, an event centre that is just about 15 metres to the main gate of their institution, Yaba College of Technology, Akoka. Unknown to the first two, Femi, a roommate of theirs, had packed four cans of beer in the bag strapped to his back before they started the short journey back to school. His intention was to smuggle in the alcohol to their room to continue their drinking escapade. But unfortunately for Femi, the security man who noticed that they were drunk insisted on frisking them before they could enter the campus. An argument ensued as the three students threw verbal mis

Jonathan Not Clueless, Incompetent – Okupe

Image
The Presidency says President Goodluck Jonathan has done well since he assumed office. It therefore said the accusation of incompetence levelled against him was untrue and a mere political propaganda. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe stated this in a statement on Monday. Okupe, who said the claims by the opposition that the President was incompetent were untrue and lacked facts, adding that part of the opposition’s strategy to present the government as not being effective, was to advance their selfish cause. The president’s aide said the background of Jonathan indicated that he was neither a clueless nor an incompetence leader. Okupe said, “The background of President Jonathan does not fall into the mould of incompetence or cluelessness that the opposition tries too hard to sell to the Nigerian populace. “By definition, Reference Dictionary says, ‘Incompetence is lacking qualification or ability’. “Webster Dictionary d

FG May Dump Ribadu Report On Oil Industry

There are strong indications that the Federal Government has commenced moves to kill the report of the Petroleum Revenue Special Task force headed by ex-boss of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu. Three months after the Ribadu panel submitted its report on November 2, 2012, the much-expected White Paper that would make the recommendations contained in the document implementable has not been released. Checks by The Punch in Abuja on Monday indicated that the Federal Government appeared to have lost interest in the report, the content of which was hailed by many analysts at the time of its presentation. A top government source confided in one of our correspondents on Monday that the Federal Government considered the Ribadu report as “not comfortable” and that most of its “embarrassing” recommendations would be missing whenever the Wogu committee submits its report. The source added, “Right from the outset, government displayed nonchalant attitude to the r
