IN a subtle move to further register its displeasure over the recent pardon granted embattled former Bayelsa State Governor, D.S.P Alamieyeseigha, the United States (U.S.) has excluded Nigeria from a planned summit between President Barack Obama and some African leaders on how to strengthen democratic institutions in the continent. The presidents of four select countries from Africa, including three from West African were invited to the parley scheduled for the White House next week. According to a statement signed on Monday by White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, President Obama has invited the presidents of Sierra Leone, Malawi, Senegal and Cape Verde to join him next week Thursday for the summit. KANO BLASTt: Something Serious Has Gone Wrong In Nigeria – David Mark

Image
The bomb blast in Kano on Monday evening which left scores dead and several others with varying degrees of injury has elicited the response of Senate President David Mark who said it shows that something serious is wrong with the country. In a statement by his media aide, Kola Ologbondiyan, Mark said: “This act is condemnable. It is inhuman and barbaric. This is certainly not part of our culture. This is alien. It is forbidden. We cannot live like this. Something serious has gone wrong in the land. We must do well by returning to the basics.” Mark denounced the renewed violence, saying it happened at a time Nigerians were beginning to heave a sigh of relief that the killings largely perpetrated by the dreaded Boko Haram sect had abated. “No matter the level of anger in a man’s mind, taking the life of another person cannot be a solution. All of us across the divide must join hands to end this carnage in our land”, he said. Mark then urged aggrieved persons or groups to

Making it the second time a whale will appear in Lagos, Nigeria; A pygmy sperm whale sailed to the shores of Lekki Beach yesterday and without consulting 'The Oga At The Top', residents of the area who spotted the whale welcomed it to death instantly. Food Time? Hell Yeah! Meanwhile, it is known that this specie of whales is going on extinction. This may probably be the last one on earth. Sorry, it's dead now.

Revealed: How First Lady, Minister, Protect Rogue Immigration Officers

First Lady Patience Jonathan and Interior minister Abba Moro protect errant immigration officers from being sanctioned for misdemeanor The First Lady, Patience Jonathan, and the minister of interior, Abba Moro, have been accused of shielding two senior immigration officers from facing disciplinary action and sanctions for misconduct and conversion of property of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, into personal use. The two officers allegedly misappropriated two vehicles belonging to the service kept in their custody and have refused to account for them relying on their closeness to the First Lady and the interior minister. Many of the colleagues of the errant officers are miffed that rather than being sanctioned by the immigration authorities for their misconduct, the two have since been promoted or deployed to highly visible posts. The two officers are David Adi, a deputy comptroller, who was recently posted to Kaduna as passport comptroller and Fimibama Steven, an a

Exclusive: Defence Chief Opts For Voluntary Retirement

Image
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, President Goodluck Jonathan will, any moment from now, overhaul the service chiefs, even as the chief of defence staff (CDS), Admiral Ola Ibrahim, has asked for voluntary retirement from the service. Ibrahim, who is from Kwara State, replaced retired Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin. Until his appointment, Ibrahim was the chief of naval staff (CNS). He was appointed to the office on October 3, 2012, when the president named Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, from Delta State, as the new CNS. Until his elevation, Ezeoba was the chief of administration at the Defence Headquarters. Jonathan also named Air Marshall Alex Badeh from Adamawa State as the new chief of air staff. Badeh was, until his new appointment, the air officer commanding, Training Command, Kaduna. But, Jonathan retained the incumbent chief of army staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika from Abia State. According to a reliable source from the State House, Admiral Ibrahim had me

How Osaze Has Lost Over N40 Million In Fines Paid To West Brom

Image
Nigerian striker, Peter Odemwingie has been punished with another fine for his latest Twitter where he insinuated that West Brom are trying to ruin his career. He has now been fined over £170,000 for various outbursts on the social media site. The latest one could have gotten Odemwingie sacked but the club will not be going that way though it is now almost sure that he will be sold in the summer with one year left on his contract. He said on Twitter: “If they like they shouldn’t even give me 10 mins to play. Threatening to ruin my career? Career I closed already last summer? No harm to me. “Want to treat me like an average player. The abuse and praise I get is it average? So get some extra from me too.” The 31-year-old had ridden to Queens Park Rangers during January’s transfer deadline to push through a transfer but he was snubbed at the gate and fined £75,000 for a Twitter outburst afterwards. West Brom issued a statement which read: “The club is aware of comments m

Toure Wants To Leave - Agent

Image
Yaya Toure's agent has claimed that the Ivorian superstar is ready to tell Manchester City he is leaving if a new deal is not concluded by this weekend. Toure's representative Dimitri Seluk says talks have been ongoing for six months over an extension to his current deal, which runs to 2015. However, Seluk says that things have not gone according to plan and he does not feel that Toure will stay. "If he signs a contract in the next three or four days, OK. If not, we will not wait any longer and will start negotiations with different clubs," Seluk is quoted by The Sun. "Today is Tuesday, so it means by Saturday. We will say 'Thank you. OK, Yaya will leave in May.' "I do not feel he will stay at City. This is not about money. He wants to leave because of many reasons. "He is one of the best players at Manchester City but does not feel the respect of the staff. Only Roberto Mancini respects Yaya." Toure, who is currently

KANO BOMB ATTACK: Northerners Take Refuge At Security Formations In Onitsha

Northerners, especially Hausas residents in Onitsha in Anambra State, have fled to various security formations in the state and neighbouring Delta State capital of Asaba for fear of possible reprisal attack following Monday’s Kano bus blasts in Kano in which many Igbo have been killed.   The fears came after the news of the bomb blast filtered in and so northerners hurriedly closed down their shops at bridge head in Ose Okwodu and other parts of the city and take refuge at the 302 Artillery Regiment Barracks and other police stations.   Although nobody or group was said to have carried any reprisal attack on members of Arewa community in Onitsha or any part of the state, they became frightened that given the degree of the bomb blast and its intentional nature, members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other people in the state will take up arms against them.   However, a security source who pleaded anonymity said they

Reps Wants Amnesty For Boko Haram

The House of Representatives yesterday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to grant amnesty to members of Boko Haram sect without further delay in order to end the  spate of violence in the country. Adopting a motion on matters of urgent national importance sponsored by Rep. Ibrahim Olaifa (AC, Oyo), MPs said the government and the nation have everything to gain when the violence is ended. In his motion, Rep. Olaifa argued that if the same government had given amnesty to Niger Delta militants there was no reason that it won’t extend same to Boko Haram members because they too are Nigerians who deserve to be treated as such. “We have continued to lose lives and property everyday but there is nothing to lose if we engage these people in dialogue and offer them amnesty. They are Nigerians and we know that poverty pushed some of them to engage in violence. We should turn them to peaceful human beings instead of treating them as goats. Nigeria has nothing to lose,” Olaifa sa

FG Has No Power To Deregulate, Must Fix Petrol Prices, Court Rules

The Federal Government has no powers to deregulate the downstream petroleum sector and must always fix the price of petroleum products sold across Nigeria, a Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled. Justice M. Bello on Tuesday gave the ruling in the case of Bamidele Aturu versus Minister of Petroleum Resources and the Attorney General of the Federation. The judge granted the six reliefs sought by Mr Aturu including the sixth which is “AN ORDER directing the Defendants to fix and publish regularly prices of petroleum products forthwith.” A statement emailed to Channels Television by Mr Aturu said “the court declared the policy of deregulation as unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.” The statement reads, “The Court agreed with all our arguments and granted all our reliefs in the following specific terms: “1. A DECLARATION that the policy decision of the Defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum

Beckham Begins Bejing Role

Image
David Beckham has arrived in Beijing to begin his role as China's first global football ambassador. The former England captain, who will combine the job with playing for Paris Saint Germain, was met by a media scrum and thousands of fans at the start of his four-day visit. Beckham will attend league matches in China and visit schools to promote the game at grassroots level. The 37-year-old said earlier this month that he was "excited by the prospect of promoting the world's greatest game to Chinese sports fans". Chinese football is working to recover from a match-fixing scandal that has seen several top officials, players and referees jailed or banned. Television viewing figures for foreign leagues far outnumber those for the tarnished domestic league, while the national side failed to qualify for next year's World Cup. Source:  sky sports

Dear President Obama, Goodluck Jonathan Must Be Invited To Washington

Image
Dear President Barack Obama: Greetings. On behalf of the good citizens of the District of Columbia, who, in their infinite wisdom, entrusted me with the Office of the Mayor, I am writing to draw your attention to an issue of urgent municipal importance. Although my aides here in the Mayor’s Office are yet to crosscheck things with Mr. Jay Carney, your Press Secretary, after he issued a curious statement today, I have decided to be proactive by reacting to that extremely disturbing statement. Mr. President, it would seem that you have convened a prestigious summit between your esteemed self and four Heads of State from the continent of Africa. They have been invited to parley with you in the White House in order to explore avenues of strengthening democracy in Africa. According to the statement released by Mr. Carney, “President Obama looks forward to welcoming President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Joyce Banda of Malawi, and Pr

Ronaldo Deserved Ballon D'Or - Mourinho

Image
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho believes Cristiano Ronaldo was unfairly beaten to the 2012 Ballon d'Or crown, insisting the Portuguese winger was more "decisive" than Lionel Messi last year. Messi, 25, claimed his fourth consecutive player of the year award in January, edging out Ronaldo and third-placed Andres Iniesta with 41.6% of total votes. But Mourinho claims Ronaldo was more influential to Real Madrid as Los Blancos became Spanish champions, suggesting he refused to turn up to the awards ceremony due to inaccurate voting. "Cristiano should have won the award to the best player in the world," Mourinho told RTP1. "He was champion in La Liga, he was decisive in the league with all the records. "Am I sorry for not having gone to the gala? No. It was the right decision. One, two or three people called me saying they had voted for me but the vote showed up as cast for somebody else. So, I decided not to go." In an interview fitt

David Luiz In Line For Brazil Captaincy

Image
Chelsea defender David Luiz has backed Thiago Silva to be handed the captaincy for Brazil's international friendly against Italy on Thursday but admits he would relish the opportunity to lead his country. Brazilian national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is believed to be eager to hand the responsibilities to either Luiz or Silva for the upcoming matches against Italy and Russia, as well as next month's World Cup qualifier against Bolivia. Luiz, 25, has asserted his position with the Selecao after a breakthrough season as both a midfielder and a defender for Chelsea, although he was quick to deflect praise onto his compatriot Silva. "I do not know who it will be. I think both have to keep the spirit of leadership within the team. The most important thing is the team and all players have to try their best," Luiz said. "Thiago Silva and I have a great friendship off the field too and I'm sure whoever is the captain will do the best for the team. I

“Ahmadu Ali Suffering From Oral Diarrhoea for Saying Yoruba People Are Ungrateful” – Fasheun

Image
The founder of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has carpeted the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ahmadu Ali, for describing Yoruba people as ungrateful. Dismissing Ali’s statement as a symptom of “verbal diarrhoea,” Fasehun said it proved that the former Education Minister, whose mishandling of a students’ crisis led to the death of several youths in 1978, was as insensitive, reckless and narcissistic as ever. According to him, it was foolhardy for Ali to sweepingly insult world-class Yoruba dignitaries whose shoe latchet he could not untie. Fasehun said: “There are some leaders, who had accidentally found themselves in positions in our national life, but their poor performance made them materials that Nigerians would rather prefer to abandon on the rubbish dump of ignominy. Retired Colonel Ahmadu Ali is one such character. Who can forget his inglorious role as Minister of Education in the 1978 ALI MUST GO sag

The Federal Government has instituted a charge before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, against a new generation bank and two of its top staff for allegedly conspiring with some alleged drug barons to conceal large sums of money, allegedly realised from illicit dealing in hard drug. The bank, its staff and others are being tried by the Federal Government through the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and are standing trial on a five-count charge. The matter is before Justice James Tsoho. The accused are Diamond Bank, Lasisi Abayomi, Hillary Ojukwu, Oni Oil and Gas Limited, Onoche Ikenua and his wife, Lizzy Chinyere Ikenua. Jonathan Insists On Fuel Subsidy Removal

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, in Lagos, unveiled a platform of economic development for the country that must be predicated on full removal of fuel subsidy.   Speaking at the Nigeria Summit 2013 organised by The Economist with the theme Enabling and Implementing Change, Jonathan said the fuel subsidy just have to be removed, but after discussing with the public about the easiest way to do it. He said: “We cannot continue to waste resources meant for a greater number of Nigerians to subsidise the affluent middle class, who are the main beneficiaries.” It would be recalled that attempt by the Federal Government to remove the fuel subsidy on January 1, 2012 led to widespread protests in the country, forcing the government to partially reinstate the subsidy with fuel price set at N97 per liter from N65, prompting an increase in last year’s budget by N161 billion to accommodate the subsidy. The president also disclosed that the Federal Government had adopted a

A week after suffering “multiple seizures” during the filming of a music video, Lil Wayne has now been released from hospital. The hip-hop star was first admitted to a LA practice last Tuesday, leading to many varied reports regarding his health. KANO BOMBING: I Packed My Intestines With My Cloth – Survivor

As Nigerians continued to express outrage over Monday’s suicide bombing at a bus park in Kano which claimed over 60 lives, survivours of the bomb attack, yesterday on their hospital beds, recounted their harrowing experiences and agony, saying they saw death.   Abdullahi Maiagogo Gayawa, a 70 year-old wrist watch seller who was affected by the blast said: “I was at the motor park as usual for a routine business when in a middle of the transaction, I heard a loud bang that sent me sprawling on the ground. Initially, I could not comprehend what happened but rose and took to my heels only to notice that my stomach was ripped open, with my intestines gorging out. I quickly packed my intestines with my cloth and was trying to escape from the scene when suddenly I woke up in the hospital surrounded by a team of medical doctors”. The Septuagenarian, looking frail and worn out told Vanguard on his sick bed: “I saw death at a close range and I had almost given up hope of livi
