Senate Rejects State Creation, Rotational Presidency

Image
Two contentious political issues, state creation and rotational presidency, have been rejected by the Senate. In its report on the review of the 1999 constitution submitted Wednesday, the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution disclosed that none of the 61 requests for state creation satisfied the provision for the creation of a new state in the constitution. According to the committee, more of those requests coupled with the entire provision of section 8(1) which states: “An act of the National Assembly for the purpose of creating a new state shall only be passed if: (a) a request, supported by at least two-third majority of members (representing the area demanding the creation of the new state) in each of the following namely, (i) the Senate and the House of Representatives (ii) the House of Assembly in respect of the area and (iii) the local government councils in respect of the area, is received by the National Assembly; (b) a proposal for the creat

PDP ignores Rivers Court Ruling On Amaechi

Image
Mr Amaechi was suspended by the National Working Committee of the party on Monday last week over the removal of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Timothy Nsirim, and 17 councillors from office. Dissatisfied with the party’s action, the governor approached the court to challenge his suspension. The court, presided over by Emmanuel Ogbuji, had last Friday restrained the PDP from taking further action against the embattled governor pending the hearing of a substantive suit challenging his suspension from the party. The court also asked the governor to serve the PDP the necessary court processes by pasting them on the walls of the national secretariat of the party in Abuja. However, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh denied that the party was restrained from taking further action against Mr. Amaechi, saying there was no ruling on the matter but that there was an action in the court. “Have you seen a copy of the ruling you are ta

This Is What $1Bln Cocaine Looks Like, Seized By Customs

Image
Two speedboats on their way to deliver huge shipments of drugs to the United States were stopped short by U.S. Customs patrols this past Memorial Day weekend, and their combined cargo came to an astounding 6000 kilos of cocaine. That’s about $1 billion worth, if you’re keeping track. The first interception came on Friday when an airborne Jacksonville, Florida-based Customs and Border Protection crew spotted a speedboat north of the Galapagos Islands, west of the country of Ecuador, in the Pacific Ocean. Crewmen on the 30-foot boat began to throw the goods overboard once they’d been spotted and officials and began ‘washing the boat to eliminate traces of cocaine,’ according to an official release. A customs helicopter was called to intercept the vessel and shots were fired, disabling the boat and its passengers, who were taken into custody. Around 3000 kilos of cocaine were on the boat, worth about $500 million. Then, on Saturday, another boat was spotted, this time on the

FG To Ban Pure Water In 2014

Determined to check the continued despoliation of the environment, the Federal Government yesterday said plans are underway to ban the use of plastic bags in the country. Minister of Environment, Mrs. Hadza Mailafia, who dropped the hint during the 2013 World Environment Day celebration in Abuja, said government would favour the use of paper bags in their place. Mailafia, who said the ban would take effect from January 2014, also said the Federal Government was also considering banning the use of sachet water. According to her, the move to ban the plastic bags are necessitated by the numerous health and environmental hazards associated with their use. The minister noted that unlike the paper bags that could easily decompose, plastic bags are non-biogradable materials which could stay in the soil for years, contaminating water sources when washed into the rivers by the rain. Relying on the Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO’s, statistics, the environment minister said one-thi

Senate Stops N4bn First Ladies' Mission House Project

Image
The Senate on Wednesday dropped the controversial African First Ladies’ Peace Mission House project when it passed the N259.65bn budget of the Federal Capital Territory for the 2013 fiscal year without approving the N4bn appropriated for it.   In February when the budget proposal was brought to the National Assembly, it contained N4bn vote for the construction of the mission house in Abuja, a development that attracted a lot of criticisms from members of the public. The Senate, during the second reading of the bill, questioned the rationale of committing scarce resources to prosecute a less important structure. Civil rights groups and political parties had also berated the Federal Capital Territory Administration for budgeting N4bn for the construction of the building for a non-governmental body headed by the wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan. They had contended that since the Federal Government had earlier declared the mission as a non-governmental organ

Dangote To Site $8bn Refinery In Olokola FTZ

Image
Indications emerged on Wednesday that the $8bn refinery proposed by Africa’s richest man and President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, would be located at the Olokola Free Trade Zone, Ondo State.   A senior official of the company, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, told our correspondent that the refinery would be located in the OFTZ. One of the factors considered for the location of the refinery, according to the source, is that it is the biggest deep seaport in the country and other big industries are located there; besides, Ondo is one of the oil producing states in the country. The source added that stable crude oil supply was also a vital element in the choice of the location for the refinery because Chevron and a number of other oil producers had oil fields in the oil-rich region of the state. On why Lagos was not chosen, industry analysts said though the state was a coastal state, Dangote would have to build
