Heartbreaking: Story of 18-month-old Girl 'Trapped' In Her Own Gigantic Head (PHOTOS)

Image
These heartbreaking pictures show a rural Indian girl of just 18 months old suffering from hydrocephalus, a build up of fluid inside the skull. The family of Roona Begum, from the village of Jirania in India's north-eastern state of Tripura, cannot afford to pay for her to be treated. Her father Abdul Rahman, 26, works in a brick factory, where he earns the equivalent of just N434 a day. Babies who are born with hydrocephalus would normally require prompt surgical treatment to avoid being left permanently disabled. But without the means to pay for a doctor, Mr Rahman and his family can only do their best to keep Roona comfortable as they watch her condition slowly and inexorably deteriorate. Sometimes misleadingly known as water on the brain, hydrocephalus is caused by a build-up of the cerebrospinal fluid inside the skull, increasing pressure on the brain inside. The brain constantly produces new cerebrospinal fluid at the rate of about a 500 mL a day, while old fluid is

The North Korea Conundrum

Image
Obama is reacting prudently. But Pyongyang’s belligerence doesn’t bode well for arms control. The Obama administration is reacting responsibly to a series of provocations from North Korea, shoring up defenses while seeking a diplomatic solution to the crisis . But even if North Korea is deterred from attacking South Korea or U.S. forces for the foreseeable future, the defiance it has demonstrated in the last several weeks renders more elusive than ever achievement of the administration’s ultimate goal: a Korean peninsula without nuclear weapons. Last month the U.N. Security Council — including China, North Korea’s longtime patron — approved new economic sanctions after North Korea conducted a third nuclear test. Undeterred, the North announced Tuesday that it would restart a plutonium reactor it shuttered in 2007. The immediate concern for the United States and South Korea is a cascade of statements and actions by North Korea that threaten the military and political status

Image
A joint campaign poster of two serving governors, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, on Wednesday flooded Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital and its environs. The posters announced the desire of the two men to contest the 2015 presidential election. Though both men are members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, they are believed to be in the bad books of President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of their party. Mr. Amaechi is the current Chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum and has admitted that the presidency wants him out of the position because of his insistence on probity and accountability in the oil sector. The recent formation of the PDP Governors Forum by the party leadership is believed to have been done to whittle down the influence of the Rivers State Governor among his colleagues. The new forum is headed by another PDP governor, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom. Prior to the emergence of the posters in A
